Improving the User Experience on your eCommerce Site

UX and eCommerce

User Experience (UX) is an important part of website design. There are many reasons why. The first is the impression that your website design and UX provide to a visitor. If someone arrives at your website or online store and isn’t sure how to navigate the site and find what they’re looking for, they will immediately have a negative opinion of your business. Imagine that you walked into a bricks and mortar retail store and none of the aisles were organized, there was no signage or labels, and it was tough to walk around inside the store. Would you want to spend time shopping there? Likely not.

Another reason that UX is important is because it helps customers and increases sales. Not only is it important to make a good impression on a customer, but you also want to help them find what they are looking for. This not only makes their transaction smoother and more pleasurable, but it also improves sales and conversions. If people can find what they’re looking for, they’re more likely to buy something. The easier it is to find more items they’re looking for, the more they will buy.
Here are some ways to improve the UX of your eCommerce site and boost sales.

Use Photos

People like to see what they are shopping for, so make sure that you have large, clear photos on your site. This is especially true for the hero image or featured area on the site. Use a simple, uncluttered design in this area and don’t use too many words. Avoid giving people too many conflicting options or they may be overwhelmed. You also want to make it obvious what your shop sells. If you specialize in athletic shoes, for example, try to ensure that your hero image is a nice picture of an athletic shoe.

Help People Navigate

Navigating through your website should be straightforward. A good idea is to list general, broad categories on your homepage and in your main navigation menu. Limit the main menu to about five to seven options with clear titles. For example, have categories such as MEN’S SHOES, WOMEN’S SHOES, KIDS SHOES, etc. rather than PRODUCTS, TRAINING, SIZES, etc. The former is much more clear and easy to understand. Having simple navigation is good website design. As a WordPress developer Toronto experts, we are here to help!

Filter Down

You need to give people the ability to filter down their search. Once someone clicks on a main category, give them subcategories to look through. You may want to include filters for colour, style, size, price, etc. depending on what items you sell. Make filters clear and easy to understand. The goal of this process is to let the shopper easily narrow in on the product they’re looking for.

Avoid Clutter

You want to avoid having too much going on. If you have contrasting offers and several different promotions and categories all highlighted on the same page, people won’t know where to click. They are also much more likely to miss out on what they’re actually looking for because they’re distracted by confusing images and promotions.
