5 Web Design Trends for 2017 to Keep in Mind

5 Web design trends for 2017

Now that 2017 is almost here, it’s a good time to take a look forward and see what the web is likely to look like over the next 12 months. As you know, web design trends change all the time and 2017 will be no different. To keep your website looking fresh, modern and current, you’ll want to know what our web designers think the internet will look like in 2017. As a web design company Toronto, we recommend following web design trends for 2017:

Updated “flat” design

Windows “Metro” and Google’s “Material Design” ushered us into an age of “flat” design. However, there are some usability issues with a design that is entirely flat. As we enter 2017, more and more web designers are transitioning to a “semi-flat” design that includes more transitions, shadows and better usability options than standard flat graphic design. Even Google has updated its design language somewhat with its new Pixel phones. Similar to other web design trends for 2017, expect this one to flow over from the popular Android operating system and onto the web as a whole. Card-like layouts that are present in Material Design will continue to become more and more popular.

Mobile-first

Obviously, mobile devices are becoming a bigger part of our world each and every day. The majority of web searches are now done on mobile and, for some people, their mobile device is the only way that they access the internet. Our Toronto web design services include making your website mobile-friendly and fully responsive. Website designers will continue to capitalize on this and create designs that provide a great user experience on mobile.

Google AMP

While this is technically “mobile-first” design, it deserves its own section. We’ve talked about Google AMP before, but, basically it’s a way to make websites load faster and look better on mobile. Google AMP has been initially focused on news websites to date, but its impact will be felt across the web on e-commerce sites and many other types of online media in 2017.

Full-screen design

Mobile web designs often fill the entire screen, mostly due to the limited real estate on a mobile device. Look for this to transition over into desktop design as well. The trend will likely be for desktop design to mirror mobile design more closely, which will mean fewer sites with large borders and centered content and more sites that fill your entire screen, no matter how large it is.

Hamburger menus

This is another example of mobile’s influence on the web. Google and Android are perhaps the best-known practitioners of the top-left “hamburger menu”, but this form of navigation is quickly spreading across the entire web. This type of menu is more touch-friendly than a typical dropdown menu and it makes mobile websites much more user-friendly.
